INTERESTING TIDBITS ABOUT HONEYBEES:

Honeybees are fascinating to watch. On a normal basis, honeybees are not aggressive. When you have received a sting on the bottom of your bare foot, it is most likely because you have stepped on a honeybee gathering nectar from a floral source on the ground. If they fly around near you, they may smell your perfume or hair spray and think you are a floral source. Don’t swat at them just remain calm. If you swat at them, they may get into the defensive mode thinking they will be harmed. If you should get stung, get the stinger out by scraping it the opposite direction of how it went in.

Honeybees go from flower to flower looking for nectar, which will be taken back to the hive and eventually be cured into honey. When the nectar is placed in the honeycomb, worker bees fan it to help evaporate moisture. After the proper evaporation has taken place, the nectar is now honey and is then capped with a thin layer of beeswax. We cannot extract honey until it has been capped with beeswax.

Honeybees gather nectar from various sources, so you can get a variety of colors and flavors of honey depending on where they gather the nectar. Light color honey tends to be milder in flavor. The darker honey can be stronger in flavor, and frequently used in baking. Honey helps to preserve baked items naturally, keeping them fresher, longer.

Honeybees swarming is an amazing sight to see, a cloud of dots above you in a blue sky, all going in the same direction. Swarming generally takes place because the colony has become crowded. It can happen for other reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is overcrowding. (The queen can lay more than a thousand eggs in one day.) In this case, the colony has already taken means to create a new queen. The swarm consists of about half the colony and the existing queen. A scout bee has been sent out to locate a new home. When you see a swarm, they may be on their way to the new home or may land in a tree or other location to wait for the scout bees to find them a new home.

If a swarm should land in a tree near you, contact your local extension office and ask if they know a local beekeeper that you could contact.
